A New Name for the Atom of Modern Physics and an Amended Definition of Energy
Published: February 26, 2009

Being an Atomist and science teacher who believes in being intellectually honest, I reject and deplore modern physicists’ use of the word “atom” as a name for the atom of modern physics. Every physicist knows that the word atom comes from the Greek word atomos, meaning “uncuttable”, and that it was coined by the early Greek Atomist Democritus (c. 460-370 BC) to name the smallest particle of matter that can exist: the ultimate and smallest division of matter. It was explained by Democritus’s teacher, Leucippus (c. 450 BC), that if matter is repeatedly cut up, the end result will be uncuttable particles of matter or “atoms.”

Belief in the existence of atoms became the basis of the natural philosophy of Atomism, also known as “The Atomic Theory of Reality and Causality.” This theory explains that the ultimate unchangeable reality consists of atoms and kenon. It defines “kenon” as the pure empty space, or void, that separates the atoms and through which they move. It maintains that the universe is made up of an infinite number of atoms scattered throughout its infinite extent, and that the ever-shifting arrangement of these atoms in the kenon is the ultimate reality behind all appearances. It asserts that nothing exists but atoms and kenon, and that the interaction of atoms in kenon ultimately causes all the different phenomena in nature. It reveals that atoms are the eternal and indestructible particles of matter from which Nature forms, increases, and sustains all things, and into which it again resolves them when they perish.

By using the word atom to name the atom of modern physics, which has been split into subatomic particles-protons, neutrons, and electrons, physicists are engaged in destroying the most highly developed and accurate theory in natural philosophy. I will reiterate: the word atom comes from the Greek word atomos, meaning “uncuttable.” If the description of a particle does not fit this definition of an atom, it cannot be an atom. Therefore, the splittable atom of modern physics is really misnamed.

In my book The End of Pseudo-science (2007), I gave the atom of modern physics a new name. I gave it the name “thom”, which is the first part of the surname of the English physicist Joseph John Thomson who misnamed it an “atom” back in 1904. I did this to acknowledge Thomson as the inventor of the idea of that particle.

Any physicists who continue to call a thom an atom will soon have their theory be considered obsolete. Such a physicist will undoubtedly reject my amendment of the erroneous definition of energy in modern physics, even though it has led to a false description of the nature of the universe.

In modern physics, we are told that all the energy in the universe was here from the beginning, and will be here as long as the universe exists. It is the prime mover of the universe. It changes and moves all of the matter in the universe. It is defined specifically as the ability to do work, such as moving things or changing the shape and form of matter or producing heat or light or making things grow. Notice that the definition of energy in physics does not tell us what it is, only what it does or can do. As the American theoretical physicist and Nobel Prize winner Richard P. Feyman (1918-1988) explained, “It is important to realize that in physics today, we have no knowledge of what energy is.” (Six Easy Pieces, 1995, p. 71) We are told that energy has no mass or shape or volume of its own, and that it is a content of matter. We are also told that it can be separated from matter by destroying matter, and then, exist as heat or light.

The idea that matter can be changed into something that has no mass and that this something with no mass can be changed back into matter goes against reality and the atomic structure of matter. In reality, nothing can exist which has no mass, except empty space. Remember that all matter, or mass, is made up of eternal and indestructible atoms. This means that matter cannot be destroyed into nothing, but only broken up into constituent atoms. We do not observe the annihilation of matter or creation of matter. On the contrary, empirical evidence, which is the basis of physics, shows that matter cannot be created or destroyed but only change from one form of matter to another.

Every physicist should know that matter exists in five forms- solids, such as rocks; liquids, such as water; gases, such as air; plasmas, such as ions; and radiations, such as heat and light. In terms of visibility, matter ranges from the obvious (easy to see) to the subtle (hard to see) to the invisible (impossible to see). We know that burning matter gives off heat and light. Modern physicists regard heat and light as not being matter, and say that they are forms of energy because they have no weight. Being an Atomist, I know that they are wrong. Heat and light, like everything else, are made up of atoms, which have mass. Anything with mass has weight, even if the weight is indeterminable. The German–born American theoretical physicist Albert Einstein (1879-1955) claimed that light is made up of particles that have no mass, called “photons,” which is why light has no weight. This claim makes no sense because there is no such thing as a particle without mass. A particle is a very small piece of solid matter. As I have already explained, all matter is made up of atoms.

Every physicist knows that light from the sun heats the earth. Light is intrinsically related to heat; it cannot be separated from heat, which is certainly not made up of massless photons. Light and heat from the sun are composed of the same atoms. I define light as movement of radiant aggregates of atoms that excites the sensation of sight.

As for energy, I define it as the activity of atoms or aggregates of atoms directed toward work. As I have explained before, the word “energy” comes from the Greek word “energeia” (from en, in; plus ergon, work; and from energos, active), a word used by ancient Greek philosophers to refer to the activity of a thing directed toward work, or the accomplishment of something. When the English physicist Thomas Young introduced the word energy into the technical vocabulary of science in 1807, he defined it incorrectly as the ability to do work. This definition belongs to a different Greek word, dynamis (from dynasthai, meaning “to be able.”) The early Greek Atomists used this word as the name for power, force, or strength. They held that an atom has dynamis from its sheer existence, but not energeia. It is the dynamis of atoms that makes the energeia of atoms and aggregates of atoms possible.

In my book The End of Pseudo Science, I amended the word “energy” to mean the activity of a thing directed toward work. By doing so, I have overthrown the false energy theory used by Einstein and quantum mechanists, claiming that energy is what makes matter change or move.

I have also overthrown Einstein’s Theory of Relativity, which claims that matter can be changed into energy and vice versa. No longer can it be claimed that this can be done. No longer can it be claimed that energy is a content of matter, and that matter can give off energy. I have clearly shown that matter, which is made up of atoms, can only give off atoms or aggregates of atoms. Atoms are the only matter existing in the universe, and they cannot be created or destroyed. Remember this important fact: atoms have dynamis, or power, from their sheer existence. They use this dynamis, which cannot be separated or detached from them, to engage in, or carry on, energeia. Energeia is not something that matter can be changed into and vice versa.

It is very important to understand from now on that what modern physicists called forms of energy—heat, light, sound, electricity, etc.—are made up of atoms and are, therefore, forms of matter. Matter can only be changed from one form of matter into another, or broken up into constituent atoms.
